Model: Amber
Dress from Forever 21.

So I always thought Forever 21 was the most interesting place... first of all, it's FULL of girls (and the few unwilling boyfriends dragged to go shopping). Then there's me running through the store with my model trying to pick out something cute. The Forever 21 in the SF Union Square is like the mother of all Forever 21's--it's 3 stories tall and quite reminiscent of the atmosphere of a farmer's market (except with 95% girls all running through trying to grab the right size before others). Anyways, it's late and I think I went on a tangent. The real interesting part about Forever 21 is that the name rings quite true for women. I mean, I see little girls (wanna grow up to be 21's) shopping there as well as hella old ladies (who I personally think shouldn't really shop there). The waiting line for the dressing rooms are even more interesting, filled with girls of all sizes, shapes, colors, and ages. It's quite interesting to see such huge contrasts all meshed together in chaos.

Anyways, this piece is probably one of my better work. Enjoy!

Comments and suggestions, as usual, are appreciated.

Edit: Sharpened.

Ok the description really makes me wonder why on earth did you turn your camera away form all those wonderful things you describe?????
Why not shoot the girls trying to find what they need in the mess and the older customers unfitting with the rest of the people and the lines and the fuss and all???? Why just isolate one girl in one dress and a simple calm pose and leave out such an oportunity to make some really in-your-face fashion shot???
Next time try to pose your model calm and perfect in the mess! Try a narrow depth of field and shoot to distinguish her from all that. And dont neglect to shoot anything else that seems emotive. All of it! That is the hard part and the most rewarding. Anyone can pose a pretty girl in a pretty dress and make a nice photo. You can go further and direct a star at the backstage of a show (?) Just giving you ideas.
I have to say congratulations and thank you for the great description.
it adds value and power to your photograph.

Hi Dora,

I wish I could have taken pictures, but in America, you're not allowed to take pictures in stores. You'd get your film confiscated or your images deleted. So, all I could do was buy a dress and go somewhere else to take the picture.

I was looking to do a fashion magazine imitation. I'm not moving away from my usual artistic photos... I'm just experimenting and trying out other kinds of portrait photography.

hmmm you are right... US is strict about thos things but there is a way to get around. One time I did that short of thing. Asked permission form the store manager and then went to the people and asked their attantion (yelling) and explained that if they did not mind we would use them as a filler background. Everyone was cooperative and I had a model so tall and beautiful that she stood out like a statue in a square filled with the store crowd. it was fun. and difficult... just keep it in mind, ok?
you need a bit of brightness on your forground here. The back is too bright and exposed in between you lose the emphasis on the girl... (I think) Dodge her a bit perhaps...
